A visit to the ancient city of Petra in Jordan is an amazing experience. The city is surrounded（环绕）by mountains of pink rocks. To reach it, tourists have to walk for more than a kilometer
through a narrow gap（窄缝）in the rock. Then they come to a large building. The building is cut directly into a cliff（悬崖）. Such beautiful rock-cut buildings make the city famous.
Two thousand years ago, the city was a busy and noisy place. At one time, more than 30,000 people lived there. This great city lasted for hundreds of years, but the pink rocks were not as safe as they seemed. Earthquakes destroyed many of the buildings. As the years went by, people stopped living there. Finally, the world forgot the city of Petra.
In 1812, a Swiss explorer（探险家）heard about the lost city. Local people told him that it was in the mountains. And he paid a guide to take him there. When he returned to Europe, he wrote about Petra and people started visiting the city.
Today, Petra is a busy place again. More than one million tourists go there every year. But now the traders sell postcards, camel rides and cold drinks. There are museums, shops and restaurants, but nobody lives there. At night the ancient city is quiet again.
