Huang Xuhua, chief designer of China's first-generation nuclear submarines(核潜艇), died on Thursday evening in Wuhan, Hubei Province.

Born into a family of doctors in Guangdong Province in March 1926, Huang was the third child of his parents. After spending his boyhood in wartime, he joined Shanghai Jiao Tong University to study shipbuilding. During the years at the university, the young man studied hard and learned about the communist revolution. He joined the Communist Party of China in April 1949, right before his graduation. In 1958, Huang was chosen to join the research team tasked with designing China's first nuclear-powered submarine.
At that time, China had no basic conditions for this technology. The researchers knew little about it and had few reference materials. They searched newspapers and magazines for information. “It was extremely difficult to find a little piece of information,” he recalled. “The information was either too fragmented(零碎的) or hard to tell whether it was true or false. ” They finally came up with five plans after piecing together all the information they found and carefully studying two US submarine models.
The team members didn't have any computers or digital calculators(计算器), so they used abacuses and rulers to solve problems. To ensure the right calculation results, they were divided into three groups to calculate at the same time. Even when the project stopped from 1962 to 1965 due to economic difficulties, they didn't give up.
After years of hard work, China built its first nuclear-powered submarine in 1970, making China the fifth country to have such technology.
Huang's name was kept secret until 1987. Due to his outstanding contributions, Huang was given the Medal of the Republic, China's highest honour, in 2019.
