In ancient Greek mythology(神话), the Sphinx was a scary monster with a woman’s face, a lion’s body, and an eagle’s wings. It sat on a high rock outside the city of Thebes and blocked the only road. She asked every traveller who passed by a riddle, “What walks on four legs in the morning, two at noon, and three in the evening?” If they couldn’t answer it, the Sphinx would kill them. Many people died until a brave young man named Oedipus came. When the Sphinx asked him the riddle, Oedipus thought carefully and answered, “It’s man. As a baby, one crawls(爬行) on all fours. As an adult, one walks on two legs. In old age, one uses a stick like a third leg. It’s about different life stages.” Hearing this, the Sphinx was so angry and shocked that she jumped down and died. The people were happy and made Oedipus their king.
