热考素材 名著选读 The Clarkson family live in the country near Cambridge, about half a mile from the nearest village and about a mile from the river. They have a big, old house with a beautiful garden, a lot of flowers and many old trees.
One Thursday morning in July, Jackie comes in from the garden. She is a tall, fat woman, thirty years old. It's the hottest day of the year, but she wears a warm brown skirt and a yellow shirt. She goes into the kitchen to get a drink of water. Just then the phone rings.
"Cambridge 1379," Jackie says.
"Hello. This is Diane. I want to talk to Mother."
"Mother isn't here," Jackie says. "She's at the doctor's."
"Why? What's wrong?"
"Nothing's wrong," Jackie says. "Why are you telephoning? Are you going to come this weekend? Mother wants everyone to be here."
"Yes, I want to come," Diane says. "I'm phoning because I have no money for the train ticket."
"No money! Mother is always giving you money!"
"This phone call is very expensive," Diane says coldly. "Tell Mother, please. I need the money."
Jackie puts the phone down. She takes a cigarette(香烟) from her bag and begins to smoke. She feels angry because her sister always asks for money. Diane is twenty years old, the youngest in the family. She lives in London, in one room of a big house. She wants to be a singer. She sings very well but she can never get work.
