On a cold, windy night, a policeman patrolled（巡逻）the quiet street. Near a closed hardware store, he saw a man standing in the doorway, smoking a cigar. The man greeted the officer politely and started a conversation.
“Twenty years ago tonight, I had dinner here with my best friend, Jimmy Wells,” he said. “I was leaving for the West to make a fortune the next day. We promised to meet right here at the same time, twenty years later—no matter what happened.” He pulled out a shiny gold watch and checked the time: three to ten.
The policeman nodded and left. Soon after, a tall man in a long overcoat hurried over. “Is that you, Bob?” he asked. “Jimmy!” Bob cried, shaking his old friend's hands. They walked down the street, chatting happily about the past.
Suddenly, the tall man stopped. “You're under arrest（逮捕）, Bob. Chicago police want you,” he said, handing Bob a note. Bob unfolded it and read: “I was at the meeting place on time. When I lit your cigar, I saw you were the wanted man. I couldn't arrest my old friend, so I asked a plain-clothes officer to do it. —Jimmy Wells.”
