Giant Pandas
Sam: Hi, Lily! I hear you like giant pandas very much. Is that right?
Lily: Yes! They're my favourite animals. They have round faces, black fur around their eyes, and soft white fur. They look so lovely!
Sam: That's so cute! Where do giant pandas live?
Lily: They live in the mountains of Sichuan, Shaanxi and Gansu in China. They like thick bamboo forests. Bamboo is their favourite food.
Sam: I know bamboo is very important to them. Do they eat other food?
Lily: Sometimes they eat small animals or other plants, but 99% of their food is bamboo. They eat a lot every day—about 12 to 38 kilos!
Sam: Wow, that's really a lot! Do giant pandas have special meanings in Chinese culture?
Lily: Yes! Giant pandas are China's national treasures. They also stand for(代表) peace and friendship. China sends pandas to some countries as gifts.
Sam: That's interesting! How do giant pandas move?
Lily: They usually move slowly. They spend most of their time eating or sleeping. Baby pandas are very cute and active—they climb trees and roll on the ground. Mother pandas look after their babies for about 18 months.
Sam: Are giant pandas in danger now?
Lily: Luckily, things get better. In the past they were in danger. Now, people build panda homes. People stop others from hunting them. Their numbers grow.
Sam: That's good news! I hope I can see a real giant panda one day.
Lily: Me too! We should learn about pandas and help protect them, so they can have a safe home forever.
