When it comes to temple fairs(庙会) in China, people often think of Chinese dragon and lion dances. However, people in Sihong, Jiangsu will think of Qiangan Dance.
A qiangan is a stick made of bamboo or wood. There are lots of copper coins on it. Qiangan Dance performers use the qiangan to touch their arms, legs and other body parts softly. At the same time, they dance to the music. Because of its cultural importance, Qiangan Dance was named an intangible cultural heritage in Jiangsu in 2023.
51-year-old Hu Bo is the leader of the Qiangan Dance Association in Sihong. He started learning it at a young age. Hu believes that Qiangan Dance reflects the Huaihe culture. Sihong is along the Huaihe River, which separates northern and southern China. "Qiangan Dance here also mixes the softer style of southern China with the stronger moves of northern China," Hu said. "For example, it includes spinning and forward flips(空翻), and I spend a long time practising them."
However, few people practise Qiangan Dance these days. Hu wanted to change this, so he made a team in 2013. He has taught the traditional dance to his students. Now, many of them can perform Qiangan Dance on stage. He also makes many videos of their performances and posts them online.
"Many people encourage me to pass down and develop Qiangan Dance. This makes me want to bring it to a bigger stage," said Hu.
