My precious white elephant was stolen. I rushed to Inspector Blunt, the chief detective. He sat silently for six or seven minutes after hearing my trouble.
“Allow me to think,” he said at last. “Absolute secrecy is needed. Speak to no one, not even the reporters. I will take full control of all news.”
He turned to his clerk. “Alaric, tell the reporters to stay. They will get only what I want them to know.”
Then he pulled out a notebook. “Now, every small detail of the elephant. Leave nothing out.”
“His full name is Hassan Ben Ali Ben Selim Abdallah Mohammed Mois Ebu Bhudpoor,” I said. “But we call him Jumbo. He was born in Siam. He is 19 feet high and 48 feet long from trunk to tail. He has a scar under his left armpit and a gold-cloth saddle-blanket on his back.”
“What does he eat?” the inspector wrote fast.
“Nearly everything. The only thing he won’t touch is European butter.”
“And why, may I ask, does he refuse to touch European butter?”
I looked confused. “Does that matter?”
“Details are the only valuable things in detective work!” he insisted.
“We’ll offer a 25, 000 reward,” he decided. Then he ordered Alaric to print 50, 000 copies of Jumbo’s description, along with his photograph, and send them to every detective office.
I left, fully believing his careful plan.
