As we all know,10 September is Teachers' Day in China now. But do you know Teachers' Day in ancient China? It is a festival celebrating the over 2,000-year tradition of respecting teachers and education in China.
The history of Teachers' Day dated back to the Han Dynasty, when emperors already held ceremonies to honour Confucius(孔子) and teachers. According to some records, during the Han and Jin Dynasties, the emperor would lead officials to the Confucius Temple to pay respect to Confucius.
On that day, teachers enjoyed a day off and were given dried meat as gifts. Later, from the Tang Dynasty onward, these ceremonies were regularly held on the Spring and Autumn Ding Sacrifice Days (the first Ding day of the second and eighth lunar months).
Normally,in ancient times, there was no fixed tuition fee(学费); instead, the parents paid with money or food. Sometimes calligraphy works, paintings and even books were given to the teachers as gifts.
Among all the gift-giving traditions, the first-meeting gift was a must. There were many traditions when students met their teachers for the first time. Before they met their teachers, they needed to tidy themselves up and get well dressed. Before giving their teachers a "gift",they needed to kowtow(磕头) to a picture of Confucius and then to their private teachers.
Though the ways we celebrate the festivals are different, they share the same meaning to show our thanks and respect to teachers.
