Technology plays a role in all parts of our lives—the way we work, the way we shop, the way we communicate, and the way we live at home.
Phones have become very popular, and they don’t even have cords or buttons. You can use them to receive a call that is from anywhere and call someone who is far away in the world. In grocery stores or supermarkets, cashiers use scanners to “read” the prices on products; cash is then kept in the computer’s memory. In banks, a clerk can check our credit card products by just scanning.
Modern technology has clearly improved our lives. Personal computers can help us create, organize, and store information. The Internet allows us to go online to the World Wide Web and go shopping on the Internet. We can even “visit” faraway places online. We receive e-mail messages and connect with others around the world. In hospitals, doctors can now get information in one country with a patient in another country, bringing medical technology to remote places.
Smart highways will use sensors to measure the speed of cars. Computer chips can store millions of pieces of information. Houses may use them to store information about appliances to tell owners if there is a problem.
Many people feel that technology is having contact with our daily life. However, we must use it carefully. Lots of technology companies or the government control our use of the Internet. Our credit information and other personal data are all on computer. Protecting that information is an important issue in the years ahead.
