When the evening lights are on, a big performance (表演) happens at Xi'an's theme park, Tang Paradise. Around 20 musicians (乐师) play with traditional drums (鼓), sheng, flute, yunluo and other instruments. These are members of the Dongcang Drum Music Society playing Chang'an ancient music or Xi'an guyue.
Guyue came from the Tang Dynasty. “Guyue is our own symphony (交响曲) from ancient China,” said Qi Xingfeng, 33. Qi is the manager and also a musician of the Dongcang Society. “It has been played for over 1,000 years, and now we are inheriting (传承) it as well as innovating (创新) it.”
“We add in modern stage performance elements (元素) such as sound and lighting. We change ancient songs into theatre shows too,” Qi said. “We sometimes play songs from TV series and video games, showing that guyue can be fun too. Guyue is so attractive that more young people will have an interest in it,” he added.
In fact, the Dongcang Society now has 29 members, aged between twenty and twenty-nine. They had two years of training in the society. They must learn to play the drums and the sheng. They could also learn some other instruments.
