2026年大数据学科质量测评八年级英语下册人教版第59页答案
B
I am a middle school student. Of all the subjects, I love English best because it's like a window and helps me know more about the world.
One day, I met an Englishman in a store. It's time to practise speaking English. So soon we began to talk.
When I talked about how I was studying English, the foreigner seemed to be very surprised. He gently shook his head and said, "You don't say! You don't say!"
I was confused, and I thought, "Probably this is not a right thing to talk about, or he doesn't like talking about study."
So I said to him, "Well, shall we talk about the Great Wall? Have you been there before?"
"Certainly. When I'm back home, everyone will laugh at me if I leave China without seeing it. The Great Wall is wonderful!" he answered.
"Yes, it is one of the wonders in the world. And people from all over the world come to visit it," I said.
When I was telling him more about it, he said again, "You don't say!"
I couldn't help asking, "Why do you ask me not to talk about it?"
"Well, I didn't ask you to do so," he answered, greatly confused.
"Didn't you say 'You don't say!'?" I asked again.
Hearing this, the foreigner laughed loudly. He began to explain, " 'You don't say!' means 'Really?'. Maybe you know little about English idioms."
Wow! What a funny mistake I made! Language is so interesting. I think I can speak English well, but there are still many things I need to learn. Since then I have been careful with English idioms and now I get more of them. Next time, I can make a better talk with Englishmen!
