Taking a train through a big desert is a special journey. Now, you can take a train from Hotan City to Ruoqiang County in Xinjiang. This is because of the Hotan-Ruoqiang railway. It is 825 kilometres long.
The railway started to operate on 16 June, 2022. The rail loop line is the last section of the 2,712-kilometre Taklimakan Desert rail loop line(铁路环线). This rail loop line is the first desert rail loop line in the world.
The new line brings trains to five counties—Qiemo, Minfeng, Yutian, Qira and Lop. It makes people's dream of taking trains right from their homes come true.
Akbar Turson from Lop said, "Before, we had to take the bus to travel. It was slow and tiring. It's much easier to travel by train now. The service on trains is great too."
The train track goes for 534 kilometres through the Taklimakan Desert. So, stopping sand and keeping the track in good condition are the most challenging work.
The manager of the Hotan-Ruoqiang Railway Company said, "To keep the train safe, we planted many trees along the train track. Now there's a nearly 300-kilometre green path." They also built long bridges in areas with big dunes(沙丘). It allows the train to move on the bridges.
The Hotan-Ruoqiang railway gives people hope. It's important in people's lives and shows Xinjiang's progress in opening up to the world.
