Reading Records of the Grand Historian (《史记》) has been a wonderful journey into ancient Chinese history for me. The book covers more than 3,000 years, starting from the Yellow Emperor and continuing through to Sima Qian's time.
As a junior high school student, I not only learn about the past from this great work but also reflect on my own life and values.
The accounts of historical events in this book highlight(凸显) both the successes and failures of historical persons like Xiang Yu. Through his story, I know that life does not always go smoothly. Even a great hero may fail, no matter how powerful he is and what achievement he has made. So we students should face ups and downs in life with a calm mind.
Sima Qian's view on history has also given me more ways of thinking. He shows that those great historical figures are complex(复杂的) and not simply good or bad. For example, in the book, Qin Shihuang is shown as both a powerful emperor who united the country and a cruel emperor whose unfair methods caused pain to common people. We should learn from history because it can guide us towards better decisions in the future.
