四、阅读理解
Nowadays, watermelons can be found in almost every home in China in summer. The fruit has become more and more popular. It is reported that watermelon sales on the online platform have increased many times.
This has caused a growing need for watermelon testers like Lee Jun Kang from Malaysia. Just by holding the fruit near his ear and knocking on it with his fingers, Lee can tell by the sound whether the fruit is ripe enough to be eaten or not.
Six years ago, Lee learned about melon-knocking as a profession through a friend. He decided to learn from a farmer with rich experience. After a year's learning, Lee could work independently as a watermelon tester. "It was a challenge for me at first. When I learned from my teacher, I often cut watermelons open to see if I was right. There are just no easy ways," he said.
Lee now works with a group of farmers who grow watermelons. His task is to carry out knock tests for online buyers to make sure the watermelons sold online have similar sizes and good quality. He puts thousands of watermelons through the knock test daily in summer. "August is the peak season (旺季) for watermelon sales. And I check more than 10,000 watermelons each day," he said. "When one of my hands gets numb(麻木的), I will use the other hand. I hope to pick good watermelons for all buyers."
