The Double Ninth Festival
The Double Ninth Festival is a traditional Chinese holiday celebrated on the ninth day of the ninth lunar(农历) month. It usually takes place every year in October. It's one of the most important traditional festivals in China. It's a festival for the elderly. People usually eat Chongyang cakes, watch chrysanthemums(菊花), drink chrysanthemum wine or tea, wear cornel(zhuyu) and so on.
On that day, people usually have different kinds of activities to give their best wishes and love to the elderly. Some organisations provide free services(免费服务) for the elderly. Some people visit the old people's home and help the workers do some cleaning for the elderly. Some people organise mountain climbing activities and invite the elderly to join them because climbing mountains means "climbing to a long life". Before the festival, people are always busy. They go out to buy things, such as chicken, fish, fruit, sweets and new clothes. And they clean their houses. On the eve of the Spring Festival, the family get together for a big dinner. They usually eat jiaozi for it. After dinner, people often watch TV and talk much to welcome Chinese New Year. People call it shousui in Chinese.
The next day, the Spring Festival comes. People are very happy. They go to see friends and relatives(亲戚) and give greetings to each other(互相). And children often get red packets as New Year's gifts.
Then at the Spring Festival, people like to wear new clothes, eat delicious food, watch the dragon dances, guess riddles ... How happy they are!
