三、阅读理解
Bi Sheng was born in the Song Dynasty. He lived in a small village which lay in what is now Huanggang. He invented movable-type printing in the 1040s.
He was the first person in the world to invent movable-type printing. It was about 400 years earlier than the invention of the printing press in Germany. But how did it work in the past?
First of all, people engraved individual characters on squares of sticky clay, and baked them to make clay types. Then, when composing a text, the workers placed the types side by side on an iron plate with a frame. Next, the workers brushed ink onto the types. Finally, the types could be used for printing. These types could be used again and again for different books.
Movable-type printing plays an important role in Chinese culture. With the help of it, Chinese culture spread around the world more quickly. At the same time, movable-type printing was widely used in the world at that time. As a result, more and more cultural communication among countries took place.
Movable-type printing, the compass(指南针), gunpowder and papermaking are called the four great inventions of ancient China. They placed China in an important and even top position in the history of human civilization(文明).
