China sent up its Shenzhou Ⅸ manned spacecraft on June 16, 2012 with three astronauts. And Liu Yang became China's first female astronaut to travel into space.
“When I was a pilot, I flew in the sky. Now I am an astronaut, so I will fly in space. That will be a higher and farther flight,” said Liu. “Aside from fulfilling the tasks, I want to experience the fantastic environment in space and enjoy watching the beautiful Earth and our homeland from the space.”
Born in Zhengzhou, Henan Province, Liu went to study in a military flying school in Changchun after graduating from high school in 1997 and later became a pilot.
One of Liu's high school classmates said Liu was not talkative but she was very friendly to other classmates. She worked very hard in her studies and always ranked in the
top 10 of the class. Apart from school lessons, Liu also developed after-class hobbies. She played volleyball very well.
