余杭“守”艺人“撑”起油纸伞
Oil paper umbrellas have a history of over 1,000 years in China and Hangzhou has been famous for producing them for more than 230 years.
Liu Weixue learns the art of making oil paper umbrellas from his grandfather. “I want to bring this art to life,” Liu says. “When it rains, I hope to see people using these umbrellas—that’s my goal.”
After learning the art, Liu aims to win the hearts of young people. So he opens an online shop to sell umbrellas, which now has over 80,000 followers. However, this doesn’t make Liu speed up production. To maintain the quality, his studio produces only 1,000 umbrellas each year.
Liu hopes more people will learn about the art. He visits schools in Hangzhou to teach students and travels to other places to showcase the art.
“Liu tells us about the history of the umbrellas and how to make them. Everything is interesting to me,” says Ding Anqi, a 14-year-old student in Hangzhou.
