Flag football is a team sport that comes from American football, but it is much safer. Instead of knocking a competitor to the ground, a defender(防守队员) must pull a small flag from the ball carrier's waist(腰). When the flag is taken off, the play stops. Since there is no hard hitting, students of all ages can enjoy the game without expensive tools.
In October 2023, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) reported that flag football would make its Olympic debut at the 2028 Los Angeles Summer Games. As a new Olympic sport, there will be five-player teams. The smaller teams make it more convenient for every player to get a chance to run, pass and catch.
The National Football League (联盟) (NFL) is excited about this decision. Star player Jalen Hurts is already travelling across the country, dropping into schools and community centres to introduce flag football to young athletes. The NFL hopes that the Olympic sport will encourage more boys and girls around the world to try the game.
As Olympic fever builds in the United States, this sport has quickly spread to China. For Chinese middle-school students, picking up flag football is surprisingly simple.
