Here is a story. Zhu Yuanzhang, the first emperor of the Ming Dynasty, once used the character fu as a secret signal to kill a family. To avoid this, the kind-hearted Empress Ma ordered every family to paste the character fu in front of their doors. Everyone followed her order, but one family pasted the character upside down because they couldn't read or write.

To save the family, Empress Ma said to the emperor, “That family pasted the character fu upside down on purpose because they knew that you were coming to visit them today. Doesn't it have the same meaning as fu arrives?”
After hearing this, the emperor felt happy and immediately set the family free. From then on, people began to paste the reversed fu for luck and honouring Empress Ma.
