Maybe you know floods, earthquakes and so on. But have you heard of typhoons?
Typhoons are one of the worst kinds of storms, usually around the Pacific Ocean. Most typhoons happen in July, August and September.
How does a typhoon happen? When lots of seawater gets hot in summer, it evaporates (蒸发) into the air. This makes the air hotter. When the air gets warm enough, it starts to move higher up into the sky. Then cooler air around it rushes in. It fills the space that is left. After the air gets warmer, it starts to move quickly, making wind. The wind goes in circles and keeps moving higher in the sky. The warmer the air gets, the more quickly the wind moves. And when the maximum sustained wind speed (最大持续风速) reaches about 33 metres a second, it is called a typhoon.
A typhoon has two parts, and one is called the “eye”. In the eye, the wind does not move so fast. The other part is the wall of clouds around the eye. The strongest winds and the heaviest rain are found here.
Typhoons are very dangerous. So what should we do when a typhoon hits? The following are some useful tips.
· Stay inside. Close all the windows and stay away from them.
· Try to bring all of your things inside. Strong wind could even blow away your bikes!
· Listen to the radio, watch TV or check your phone messages (短信) for important information.
· If you’re told to go to a safer place, do it right now.

根据原文“Most typhoons happen in July, August and September”及台风形成于夏季海水受热的描述,可知台风多发生在炎热季节,故选A。
A项与原文“The warmer the air gets, the more quickly the wind moves”不符;B项原文未提及台风死亡人数;C项与原文“The strongest winds and the heaviest rain are found here(指眼周围的云墙)”一致;D项原文为最大持续风速约33米/秒才是台风,故选C。
1.D 2.A 3.B 4.C 5.D
