Have you ever imagined making your own animals that can walk on their own? More than 30 years ago, a Dutch(荷兰的) scientist and artist named Theo Jansen had this idea. He used simple things like tubes, ties, strings, and tape. He thought very cleverly. He made insect-like animals. These animals walk on the beach in the Netherlands. He calls them “Strandbeests”, which means “beach animals”.

Jansen's creatures are amazing to see. Some of them have sails or wings. The wings look like bat wings. Others look like bugs with hard shells. Some look like giant centipedes(蜈蚣) or spiders with many legs. They can walk by themselves using wind power that they store. But they have to wait a long time to collect enough wind energy to take a walk on the beach.
In 1990, Jansen first wrote in a newspaper: we could build animals to dig sand on the beach and throw it into the air. But what was the point of this? Wouldn't it just confuse people walking by? The sand was meant to build up the dunes(沙丘) by the sea. These dunes protect the Netherlands, as much of the country is low land that needs to be safe from rising sea water. Jansen said he would work on this project for one year. But he never stopped, and he is still working on it now.
In the future, Jansen hopes to use artificial intelligence (AI) for his animals. AI would let them think and make choices by themselves. In recent years, he has put many of his animals together into a group and let them walk freely on the beach. So, if you ever visit the Dutch coast and see a group of robot insects or electronic birds, don't be surprised!
