When you go out for a walk or a jog, do you see rubbish(垃圾) on the road? Maybe a plastic bottle, some paper, or an empty can. All this rubbish is bad for the environment(环境). But how often do you stop to pick it up?
Well, a new sport called plogging is encouraging people to do that. The word “plogging” comes from “jogging” and “plocka upp”. “Plocka upp” means “to pick up” in Swedish(瑞典语). The idea is simple: pick up rubbish while you are jogging!
In 2016, Erik Ahlström, a runner, was sad to see so much rubbish when he went for a run every day. So he created the word “plogging”. Now, plogging is popular in many countries of the world. In 2021, the first World Plogging Competition was held in Italy. In 2024, over 80 ploggers from 13 countries joined in and collected more than 1,200 kilograms of rubbish. In the last five years, the number of ploggers all over the world has grown from less than 5,000 to over 20,000.
There are many good things about plogging. It makes you healthier when you exercise. It also makes the streets and parks cleaner. What's more, it's a social activity. People can meet new friends in plogging groups. For us teenagers, plogging teaches us to care for our environment. So, let's all give it a try!
