C(2025·台州黄岩)
Last year, a Chinese student studying in the UK sent an email to her teacher and got a surprising reply,“Thank you for your email. I left my job to follow my dream of knitting(编织)sweaters for penguins! I will not come back to school before my penguin friends are happy.”
Sweaters for penguins? Is that real? Yes!
In the late 1990s, oil spills(石油泄漏)happened near Phillip Island in Australia. The oil was very dangerous for the little penguins. When the oil got on their feathers, it could make their “fur clothes” not waterproof(防水的). They got very cold in the water. Also, when penguins wanted to clean the oil off, they might eat it by mistake and get unhealthy.
Phillip Island Nature Parks had a great idea—put sweaters on the penguins! The sweaters kept the penguins warm and stopped them from eating the dirty oil before workers cleaned them. For over 20 years, people from all over the world have sent more than 200,000 sweaters for the penguins!
Penguin sweaters must be the right size and soft. If a sweater is too big or too small, the unfitted sweater can't go on a real penguin. Instead, these sweaters are put on toy penguins. And the money made from selling the toys helps take care of all the animals on Phillip Island. This is a new way to help the penguins!
So knitting sweaters for penguins is not just fun. It's saving lives!
