As a child, Davon Strickland loved watching shows about sharks. Today he is a student at Florida International University (FIU) studying sharks and he has made his first appearance on Shark Fest, a TV play that offers programming about the lives of sharks.
Strickland grew up in Florida and loved going to the beach and aquarium and spending time watching the animals living in the ocean. He went to a special high school with an oceanic science program where he also played football. At FIU, he is able to go on with his hobbies. He is the football team leader and studies oceanic biology.
He could be on Shark Fest because he is part of a research team led by Mike Heithaus, who studies the activities of hammerhead and bull sharks off the beach of Florida.
One of the Shark Fest shows is named Bull Shark vs Hammerhead and Strickland is in it. In the show, he is adding tags to bull sharks to follow their movement in the ocean. At first, Strickland didn’t know he would be in the show. “I was super excited to be in the show,” he told reporters.
Thinking back to his years of playing football while studying to become a scientist, Strickland said he learned much from balancing the two hobbies. In football, he picked up on “how to work as a team leader and pay attention to facts”. Those skills can also work in studying. He said, “You’re just using them differently.”
