The guitar is one of the most popular musical instruments in the world, with a history spanning over 3,000 years across various cultures. The oldest surviving example was found in Ancient Egypt. It belonged to a singer for Queen Hatshepsut and featured a long neck and three strings.
The lute, another ancient, guitar-like instrument, has a short neck and a body like half a pear, using paired strings. From 1100 to 1500, travelling performers accompanied their songs and stories with the lute.
While guitars sometimes had paired strings like the lute, they evolved to use single strings. Six-string guitars first appeared in 17th-century Italy, but the most important change came in the 1850s. Spanish guitar maker Antonio Torres Jurado made the guitar’s body bigger. His idea made the sound of the guitar louder and better. Most of today’s classical guitars follow his design.
The first electric guitars appeared in the 1930s. Electric guitars, which have a solid body, can make many different sounds. We also find them in many different shapes and sizes. Some electric guitars don’t look like guitars at all!
