Long ago, an old farmer had three sons. One day, he told them, "I'm old, and I must tell you a secret(秘密)." He pointed to a goose in his room. "This bird lays a golden(金的)egg each day."
The eldest brother, Nikandros, took the goose first. He was greedy(贪婪的). To get more gold, he asked it to lay two eggs every day, and then three. Soon, the goose became weak(虚弱的)and tired. It laid no golden eggs at all.
Nikandros gave the goose to his brother Zotikos. Zotikos wasn't greedy, but lazy(懒惰的). He didn't feed it. The goose had to have dry grass and dirty water on the ground. It became even weaker and its eggs were no longer golden.
Finally, the youngest son, Charis, took over the goose. Unlike his brothers, Charis loved the goose. He fed it the freshest grass and clean water, and walked with it in the sun.
Slowly, the goose got well again. It began laying one golden egg daily again. Charis shared the gold with his family. Seeing this, Nikandros and Zotikos realized their mistakes. They learned to care for it with the same love and respect. From then on, the goose helped them for many years.
