After the moon, Mars might be the next planet after the Earth where we can live. But Mars is no ready-made Earth. We'd have to make it Earth-like. Is this possible, or is this just an idea from a sci-fi movie? There are many ideas to make life on Mars work.
Is there oxygen(氧气) on Mars? To live on Mars, humans need water, food, a place to live, and a warm environment with enough oxygen. Mars' air is mostly impossible for humans to breathe, and there's very little oxygen, making it very cold at night. To improve Mars' air, one idea is to hit Mars with comets (彗星)and asteroids(小行星) that carry lots of water. This could give off gases(气体) and water and make the air thicker. NASA has shown that crashing asteroids is possible, but many large ones would be needed.
To grow food on Mars, we need soil, but there are many harmful things on the ground of Mars. One idea is to clean out the harmful things to help plants grow. A controlled Greenhouse(温棚) might be easier to use. However, providing plenty of oxygen, water, and food is very difficult. On Earth, scientists are trying a similar idea with Biosphere 2, a closed ecosystem with a controlled environment. But the scientists still have a hard time making it come true.
Buildings on Mars could be 3D-printed, but they would need special protection until Mars' environment becomes more like Earth. However, there are still many more challenges.
But no matter what happens, such work to make Mars more like Earth is not a waste of time. For example, work on 3D-printing technology to make homes on Mars is being used to help print homes on Earth and solve the problem of not having enough places for people to live.
