On November 4th, 2024, a primary school in Jing County, Hebei Province, invited many Chinese shadow puppetry(皮影戏) artists to perform a lively shadow puppetry show for the students. Their lifelike performance caused students watching offstage to cheer. Almost every student said they began to be interested in the shadow puppetry. After the show, students went behind the curtain(幕布) and experienced shadow puppetry in person.
Shadow puppetry has a history of thousands of years. It can date back to the Western Han dynasty. Shadow puppetry uses silhouette figures(剪影人物) made of leather in different colours, which are performed with music and singing. Controlled by performers using sticks, the figures create the illusion(错觉) of moving images on a cloth screen from behind. A team usually consists of five people, including a puppeteer, a singer and three musicians. The musicians play different musical instruments, such as suona and sihu. The puppeteer shows shadow puppetry and the singer plays all the roles in the show. The plays pass down(使流传) stories and ideas about cultural history and social beliefs.
Jing County has been carrying out an activity called “Intangible Cultural Heritage into the School”. The shadow puppetry, sugar painting and other traditional culture were brought into the students' classroom, so they could feel the unique beauty of the traditional culture. Up to now, the activity has been carried out for over twenty times.
