The Emperor wanted a way to tell the time. He wanted to name each of the years in one cycle. He was not sure what to name them. Then he saw the animals.
“I will have a race across the river!” he said. “The first twelve animals to finish the race will have a year named after them!” The animals heard about the race. They couldn’t wait!
Cat lived next door to Rat. They were good friends. “We could win!” Cat told Rat. “I will get up early,” said Rat. “I will be a winner.” “Wake me up early too,” Cat said to Rat. “We could go together.” The next day, Rat woke up early. He was very excited. He ran straight to the race. He forgot all about Cat!
Rat got to the start of the race. He saw a lot of big animals there.
“Oh, no,” thought Rat, “those animals are much bigger. They are much stronger. I am small. I am a bad swimmer. I can’t run fast.”
However, Rat was smart. He had an idea. Rat ran up to Ox. “Can you help me?” he asked. “I can ride on your head. I will sing songs in your ear.” “Okay,” said Ox, “I like songs. That sounds good.” Rat climbed onto Ox’s head. He sang and sang.
Ox swam and swam. Ox was the first to climb out of the river. He ran toward the finish line. “We are going to win!” shouted Ox. Rat jumped off Ox’s head. He ran ahead! “Yes!” cheered the clever Rat. “I will be the FIRST!” And he was!
The Emperor named the first year after Rat, Ox was the second. Tiger was the third. Then came Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog and Pig. Rat walked home with the first prize.
