Tuesday/Week 14
new report has found that the world is in a "plastics crisis (危机)". Plastics are making people ill and harming Earth, it said. The report came out in an important medical magazine.

Plastic is a huge problem because we produce so much of it. However, most of the plastic is not reused. It is thrown away, burned or ends up in landfills, sending harmful chemicals into the air, soil or rivers. Plastics have more than 16,000 chemicals in them, some of which are harmful to many living things.

Plastic is light, cheap to produce and very useful. *However, the report said that plastic might not seem so cheap when we think about its harm to people and Earth. The report found that plastic leads to at least £1.1 trillion万亿 in health costs each year.
Today, about 8 billion tonnes of plastic waste pollutes Earth—from the highest mountaintop to the floor of the deepest ocean. Single-use things, such as cups and bags, are a big part of the problem, and scientists have found very tiny pieces of plastic in every wildlife system, as well as in human bodies.
In 2022, many countries agreed that they would work towards a treaty to fight plastic pollution. A treaty is an agreement between countries. This means the countries have to follow it.
