We arrived in Phôngsali that evening, and the next day we met Zheng, a guide. To start our trip to Akha, Zheng took us onto a bus for a half-hour ride to the Nam Ou River.
A boat took us farther north, and we were dropped off after an hour or so. Then, with small packs on our backs, we climbed in the heat up a thickly forested mountainside to the cooler air of the Akha villages.
Over the next three days, we saw no other foreigners. As Zheng planned, we stayed with local families in the villages we visited. We learned about the traditional lifestyle of the Akha. In the villages, the men usually look for food with slingshots while the women do just about everything else. That includes growing cotton, turning it into thread(线), and then using the thread to make clothes.
We ate meals at people's homes. We sat on short stools on a dirt floor while pigs and chickens hung around, waiting for something to eat.
To an outsider like me, the lives of the Akha people look difficult. Yet, they are trying to keep their culture alive in the quiet hills, up in the clouds.
Luckily, in many villages the local head has a motorbike. He can ride it to markets and learn about the outside world.
I'm thankful to have travelled a lot in my life. When talking about wonderful trips, I always say, "This is a one-of-a-kind, never-to-be-repeated experience." I am so thankful there was no railway to northern Laos back then.
In the end, the journey was as rich as the destination(目的地). By willingly getting into the unknown, I found what truly makes me feel alive: the surprises waiting around the next bend on a less-travelled river.
