The year 2025 is "the Year of the Snake" according to the Chinese lunar calendar. It is also called "the Year of the Small Dragon" in Chinese culture. Both of them had snake bodies and human heads. *Shanhaijing*, or *The Classic of the Mountains and Seas*, was written before the Sui Dynasty. It tells stories about gods and goddesses. Many of them have something to do with snakes. For example, the four gods of the sea all wore snakes as earrings. They also travelled on snakes.
Snakes have shown up in many folk stories too. One famous story is called "Baishe Zhuan" or "The Legend of the White Snake". In this story, a magical snake named Bai Suzhen fell in love with a man named Xu Xian. And they quickly got married. Bai Suzhen is pictured as a kind and beautiful character.
