The French artist Georges Seurat created many paintings in his short lifetime. A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte is one of people’s favorites. People are attracted by this painting for three reasons.
Seurat created this painting in a special style called pointillism（点彩画法）, which uses small dots（点）of colour. By putting two colours next to each other, people could see a third colour.
This painting is full of details about French life in the 1880s. There are several women wearing nice clothes and carrying parasols（遮阳伞）. One woman is even walking a monkey. It looks like a perfect summer day.
This painting makes people feel calm. Even though a park like this could be a noisy place, Seurat makes it feel peaceful. He paints people sitting quietly in the shade（阴凉处）. There is a girl smelling flowers. She looks so beautiful. Throughout the painting, people are relaxing on the cool, green grass and enjoying a beautiful day.
