B
There was an old man named Sai Weng who lived on the northern border(边境) of the country. He kept many horses.
One day, his horse ran away north into the land of the Hu people. His neighbours came to comfort him when they heard about it.
Sai Weng said, "A horse won't cost me anything. And maybe it will bring me luck."
"The old man is crazy," his neighbours said to each other.
"Yes. If I lost my horse, I would be very sad," others replied.
Several months later, the horse returned, and it brought back a fine horse of the Hu breed(品种). The neighbours came again to congratulate Sai Weng.
But Sai Weng was not happy. "I got this strong horse for nothing. Maybe things will turn out badly," he said.
"He's not a good friend. He must be afraid that we will steal the horse," his neighbours said to each other.
A few days later, when Sai Weng's son was riding the Hu horse, he fell and broke his leg. The neighbours were all surprised when Sai Weng didn't care about it and said, "Maybe I'll be lucky again."
"The old man is out of his mind," his neighbours said to each other.
A year went by before the Hu soldiers approached(靠近) the northern border. Nine out of ten people on the border joined the war and more than half of them died. But as Sai Weng's son could neither run fast nor fight, he did not go to war. He could stay at home with his family.
