At a lab in Sichuan, Yu Yi is following a daily routine: he feeds fish and records them every morning. Now he is taking an ID photo of a Chinese freshwater fish. He’s recorded about 500 different kinds of Chinese freshwater fish. It makes him one step closer to his goal: taking photos of all Chinese freshwater fish.
When Yu was in middle school, he was interested in biology and began to learn more about fish. In
2014, he found an online group for fish lovers and met like-minded friends. They all liked Chinese fish! From then on, he started taking pictures of them.
Yu doesn’t just take pictures. He learns about freshwater fish from books and villagers. He spends lots of time outdoors looking for fish, studying them, recording them, and then sends fish back to nature. Yu even makes books with pictures of fish and gives an introduction to fish. It is meaningful.
Yu does all of this for a great reason. There are about 1,500 kinds of freshwater fish in China, but he worries some fish might die out before he takes a picture. He wants to help scientists protect them. He thinks every fish is important for the water ecosystem to be healthy.
