A long time ago, there was a great person called Qu Yuan. He was a very famous poet. He wrote many famous poems, such as “Li Sao” and “Tian Wen”. He didn’t bear it when his country was invaded, so he drowned himself in the river.
Local people rowed boats to save him and dropped the rice balls into the river, because they wanted to protect his body. Later people rowed boats and made zongzi at the Dragon Boat Festival to remember him. That’s the origin of the traditions of dragon boat races and eating zongzi. Another tradition is putting wormwood on the front door to remove bad things. In some places adults drink realgar wine and children wear a sachet. Now the family gets together at the festival. People have all kinds of activities to celebrate(庆祝) this traditional festival.
