The P2R Reading Method at Our School
In High School Affiliated to Southwest University, teachers introduce an important method that helps to improve students' reading. It's called the P2R method: Preview, Read, and Review.
PREVIEW
Read fast. Look for:
• the introduction or the first paragraph or two;
• the headings, pictures or charts;
• the last paragraph or two.
This is to get the main idea of the text and develop a sense of the progression of ideas.
READ
Now mark ten pages of reading and read the material, taking notes or highlighting important information.
The number of the pages you choose depends on the book you are reading.
REVIEW
You can review in many ways:
• summarize the writer's main idea in your own words;
• write down three or four sentences summarizing what you've read;
• close the book and recite the key information under each heading;
• quiz yourself on questions at the end of the passage;
• create questions you may see in the exam about this material and answer them.
The P2R method makes our students better at reading. If they keep using it, even their writing will improve.
With the P2R method, it's easier for us to read because it helps us better understand and remember the information.
