rom 26 to 31 May, Europe's biggest youth festival,
the Urdd Eisteddfod, took place in Margam Park, in
South Wales.
Held every year by Urdd Gobaith Cymru, a national youth
group in Wales, the Welsh-language festival brings together

young people aged from 8 to 25 years old, and their families. Thousands
of young people took part in the festival. They entered more than 400
competitions such as art, design and technology, poetry and playing
musical instruments. This year, there were new awards for acting, dancing, singing and musical
theater.
Elain Roberts was the Main Bard winner, and won this year's Urdd Eisteddfod
chair, made from steel produced in Port Talbot. This is in honor of the area's history as the home
of a steel factory. It closed last September after more than 100 years. To celebrate Port Talbot's history
further, a pupil performed a poem called The Factory Closing. *It tells the story of a factory worker
who loses his job after the steelworks is closed down.
Poet and writer Lilo Maddocks helped to hold the Urdd Eisteddfod. He told The Guardian
newspaper that the festival "gives a space for the Welsh language to develop outside the classroom."
Ishaan, aged 8, who went to the Urdd Eisteddfod with his family, said, "The Eisteddfod was fun,
and the shows were amazing."
