However, Wang’s grandfather encouraged her to read books and educate herself. She was interested in astronomy(天文学), so she spent countless nights studying it by candlelight. In the late 18th century, many people believed eclipses(日食或月食) were the result of gods showing their anger. But Wang believed in facts. Lin Qiaozhi(1901－1983) was a great doctor. When she was five, her mother passed away, which deeply influenced her. At 18, instead of getting married like most girls, she decided to study medicine.
