Recently, a friend of mine said I should read the graphic novel El Deafo(《超听侠》). It's a heart-warming book for all ages to enjoy. It's about young Cece Bell who goes through her childhood in a small town with hearing difficulties.
After losing her hearing at the age of 4, Bell's world is changed after returning from the hospital. Soon, her family moves to a small town, and Bell starts first grade. She is given a special hearing aid to help her hear better at school: the Phonic Ear. It has a special microphone (麦克风) for her teacher to wear, so whenever her teacher talks, Bell can hear loudly and clearly. She can hear her teacher in the whole school building, no matter what she's doing! She's like a superhero, with the power of super hearing! So she gives herself a superhero name—El Deafo—listener for all. However, with a hearing aid, Bell is also seen as "different" by some children of her age.
We follow Bell as she works her way from kindergarten(幼儿园) through fifth grade and finds her confidence. It's quite an adventure! She rises above her worries about her hearing and her hearing aids, as well as her problems with friends. It's funny in a way that anyone can enjoy, and it looks at real problems, like discrimination(歧视) with fun-filled art and humour. Like other good books for young people, this story makes us think about how we would act in similar situations and helps us understand and care about other people.
