his summer, Malaysian student Mithilesh Tew
from the University of Nottingham Malaysia
experienced Chinese culture while taking part
in a dragon dance at the University of Nottingham Ningbo
China. The video of him dancing became very popular
online.
In China, a dragon is a

symbol of power and luck.
Dressed in traditional red,
Mithilesh skillfully acted
out the dance. The video of
his dragon dance got a lot of
attention from Chinese and
Malaysian students. Many
noted that although they
grew up in different countries, they felt connected (有联
系的) through culture.
With Fujian heritage (祖籍), Mithilesh's family keeps
strong ties with the Chinese language and traditions and
believes it's important to remember one's roots. Classical
stories such as Journey to the West and Romance of
the Three Kingdoms shaped his early understanding of
Chinese culture.
Arriving in Ningbo as an exchange student in 2024
to study computer science, Mithilesh liked the integration
(结合) of the curriculum (课程) with programs in
Malaysia and the UK. Besides studying, he visited many
cultural places like the Tianyige Museum and the Old
Bund. He tried lots of local food. He also enjoyed Chinese
milk tea. It reminded him of the milk tea in Malaysia!
Mithilesh's experience shows that more and more
Malaysian students are learning about Chinese culture
in Ningbo. They study, join cultural activities, and build
strong friendships, even though they come from different
countries.
