The lion’s bad breath
There lived a lion in the forest. He was very strong. No one dared to cross him. One day, he met a monkey.
The monkey said, “Good morning, my king! You look nice today.”
“Of course!” said the lion.
Then the monkey made a funny face.
The lion asked, “Is there anything wrong?”
“Uh, no, no. Nothing,” the monkey answered.
“Then why did you make such a face? Tell me the truth!” the lion shouted.
The monkey said, “Well, uh ... Your breath smelled bad. That’s all.”
“My breath smelled bad? Is that all?” the lion asked.
“Oh yes! Yes, that’s it. That’s all!” said the monkey.
“OK, then. You will never smell it again!”
And the lion ate the monkey.

The lion was still angry. So he stopped a rabbit.
“You, there! Stop! Come here and smell my breath,” said the lion.
“Me? OK,” said the rabbit. Then she smelled it. “Oh!”
“Did it smell good or bad?” asked the lion.
The rabbit had seen how the lion ate the monkey. So she lied to the lion.
“Oh, my king. Your breath smelled good,” she said.
“Is that so? What did it smell like?” asked the lion.
“Well ... Your breath smelled like apples,” said the rabbit.
“You were lying to me!” the lion shouted. So he ate the rabbit too.

A fox watched all of this from behind a tree. He was so scared, so he tried to run away. But the lion saw him.
“You, Fox! Stop there!” shouted the lion.
“Oh yes, my king!” said the fox.
The fox had no choice but to smell the lion’s breath.
“How was it? Was it good or bad?” asked the lion.
The lion’s breath smelled really bad, but the fox couldn’t lie to him. And he couldn’t tell him the truth either.
Then the fox got an idea.
“Oh no, my king!” said the fox. “I, uh, I’ve got a cold. Yes, a cold! So I can’t smell well. But I can only guess that your breath smells good. What do you think?”
The lion smiled. “Ah! Hmm, yes. I’m sure it smells good,” he said.
“Sure!” said the fox.
The happy lion let the fox go. The fox ran away as fast as he could.

Other good ideas: I can also tell the lion that I happen to bring a special kind of clean leaf that can make breath fresh, and I can help him brush his teeth with the leaf to make his breath more nice-smelling, then I can take the chance to slip away quietly after he is pleased.
