I recently had my first true experience with the metaverse (元宇宙). The metaverse is a digital (数字的) space where you can jump between worlds and meet new friends. VRChat is one of the most popular metaverse apps. Through this app, I was able to join my friends for an online concert. The concert was made to honor Maxi Jazz, a British band leader who passed away in December 2022. Although the concert wasn't live, it was still an amazing experience.
As we watched the concert together, the world around us changed and we saw many beautiful colors. It was made even cooler thanks to our fun avatars (虚拟化身), like a big gummy bear (软糖熊) and a skeleton (骷髅) in a suit and top hat. And thanks to my virtual reality (VR) headphones, it felt like I was really there.
The biggest moment, however, was near the end when a huge stone statue (石像) of Maxi Jazz seemed to come to life! The statue stepped off its podium (指挥台), kneeled down and finally lay down to "go to sleep". I think this was meant to show his death but in a positive way. It was very touching for us.
Looking back, I realize the amazing things we can do in the metaverse through this concert. And some of these things can only be done through the metaverse, not in real life. I think that's amazing. I suggest you try it out sometime with a friend—you will enjoy it for sure!
