[2026 原创] Dogs greet each other by sniffing (嗅), but humans don't do this openly. However, the large perfume (香味) industry shows the scent (气味) is also important in human relationships. Studies have found that people can find family connections, others' feelings, and even illness through smell.
Israeli scientists did research on 20 pairs of same-sex friends. They used an electronic nose (e-nose) and two groups of people to test the smell on the friends' T-shirts. All tests gave the same result: friends' smells are more similar than strangers'.
To find out if the similar scent leads to friendship (not the other way around), they looked for 17 more volunteers. After collecting their body smell with the e-nose, they paired the volunteers without plans to play a game. People with more similar smells felt closer to each other and had better communication, according to their ratings.
Why does the scent affect friendship? Scientists guess the body smell is connected to genes, especially those related to the immune system (免疫系统). We may choose friends with similar genes without realizing it. From an developing view, helping such friends could indirectly help spread our own genes. But more research is needed to fully explain this.
