Chinese people often say “wufu linmen”. What is “wufu”?
“Wufu”, coming from The Book of Documents(《尚书》), means a long life, wealth, health, love of virtue and a peaceful death. Some Chinese people have long used five bats to stand for(代表) “wufu”. Because “bianfu”, the Chinese name for bats, includes the pronunciation of “fu”.
The character "fu" appears in all kinds of things such as paper-cuts and posters. It shows Chinese people's wishes for happiness and good luck. For example, people paste the “fu” character on doors, windows and walls during the Spring Festival. People often paste it upside down. The Chinese words for “upside-down” and “to arrive” are both pronounced “dao”. So the phrase “‘fu’ upside-down” sounds the same as the phrase “good luck arrives”.
