孩子近视预防:走进户外
If you're nearsighted(近视的), you can see
things close to you clearly, but things far away
look blurry. More and more kids around the
world have this problem.
Studies show that spending two hours or so
outside every day can help stop you from
getting nearsighted. No one knows the reason.
One guess is that outside, the light changes
from bright to dark in more different ways.
You also see different things with different
patterns, surfaces and edges(边界). It's like
exercising your eyes, so they stay healthy as
you grow.
To check if this idea is true, Chinese
scientists made indoor classrooms look like
forests. They put pictures of trees and small
bushes(灌木) on the walls and desks. They
painted the ceiling to look like the sky. They
tried to make the rooms have as many different
things for eyes to see as those in the outdoors.
For one year, about 250 9-year-olds had
classes in these "forest classrooms". Another
250 kids had classes in normal classrooms with
white walls. At the end of the year, scientists
tested the kids' eyes. They found that the kids
in the forest classrooms had fewer signs of
nearsightedness. But the decorated rooms
didn't help kids who were already nearsighted.
Experts say decorating(装饰) classrooms
can't take the place of playing outside. But it's
better than doing nothing.
Schools can offer(提供) more outdoor
classes. On weekends, parents can take kids to
play in parks or walk in the countryside. Even
when kids have to stay inside, they should stop
reading books or using phones every 20 minutes
to look at faraway things for a while. All these
small steps can work together to help keep their
eyes healthy.

A vertical farm grows greens in California
A high-tech indoor farm for growing
fresh produce has opened in the city of
Compton, California. Created by a company
called Plenty, it is a vertical farm with crops
and plants growing on towers. The farm is
expected to produce 4.5 million pounds of
greens yearly.
Traditional farming methods, like
growing crops in the ground, are affected
by climate change, seasons, soil and water
shortages. Vertical farming grows 350 times
more produce per acre, using much less land
and water.
Plenty can control the quantity of light,
water and nutrients, which decreases the
cost of growing the crops. This makes
healthy, locally grown produce more
affordable and available to people in the area.
