Biubiu would probably still be a stray dog(流浪狗) were it not for the help she received from Jin Pei, a former book editor in Shanghai.
Jin first met Biubiu on a cold night in 2015. “She followed me for a long way, and I sensed that she wanted to find herself a home,” Jin said.
Since that night, they have become close partners. Later, Biubiu joined the Paw for Heal and became a therapy dog.
Wu Qi, founder of Paw for Heal, a volunteer program established(成立) in 2012 that uses therapy dogs to help patients, said, “There are about 300 such animals in China now. About 95 per cent of them live with their owners and are put to work when someone needs help. Therapy dogs have been introduced into more than 10 cities, including Beijing, Shanghai, Chengdu, and Xiamen. By the end of 2023, they are expected to start work in another 10 cities, and their total number will probably rise to 1,000.”
