During the Song Dynasty, people in some places had a special custom(习俗) on the first day of the Spring Festival. When it was dark outside in the morning, people would dig a small hole in front of their house. Then, they buried three things: a “snake”, some black beans, and an egg. The “snake” was made of dough(面团). The black beans and the egg were cooked.
While burying them, people said, “If the snake crawls(爬行), diseases will come. If the beans sprout(发芽), diseases will come. If a chicken comes out of the egg, diseases will come.”
Of course, the dough snake couldn't crawl, the cooked beans couldn't grow out from the soil, and the boiled egg couldn't hatch(孵化). Only if these impossible things happened would people get sick. So by doing this, people believed they would stay healthy all year.
